Props (murder weapons/other), Practical Task

Murder weapons and other props:

Since the genre we have decided to go for is a slasher horror I decided to look for possible props/murder weapons that could be used. For the murder weapons I chose an axe, pitch fork, pickaxe and a saw, and for the props, videos, cassettes and a murderers diary.

Madman (1981), uses an axe as the murder weapon. I added mud and paint to the axe to make it looked more used and dirty in order to look more suitable for the genre. Madman axe death
This image shows a pickaxe, similar to the one used in the slasher horror 'My Bloody Valentine' released in 2009. For this prop alike the others, i added paint and mud in order for it to look dirtier. This is so it fitted in with the derelict looking background and gave it a darker theme. Link to My Bloody Valentine pickaxe scene

These are pitchforks, again i added mud and paint to make them look dirtier and rusty.
This image shows a saw, a common weapon used in slasher horror movies. In Saw (2004) a saw is used to cut off one of the characters foot, as on many other numerous occasions during the Saw series. I used paint and mud to make the saw look more rusty and old, to give it a dirtier and darker look. Link to Saw video
Video tapes are used in many slasher or horror films as a way of showing videos of things that have happened in the past. VHS probably being the most well known for this. I added a label to one of  the video tapes to make it more suitable for the genre. VHS TRAILER LINK
Old diaries are also a way to look in the mind of murders and find out about past events, also used in horror movies to find out information. For this i used a diary and wrote on the pages, i then burnt the edges and used a tea bag to make the pages look darker and older. I also burnt out and crossed out the faces of a picture. I did these things to add effect to the diary and make it look more realistic and creepy.

Evaluation:

  • Overall i think that the props turned out well and how i expected them to be.
  • The weapons suit the genre, although may be fairly heavy and dangerous to actually film with, so it might be safer to find realistic fake versions of these in scenes where someone may be harmed.
  • The diary and video tapes also look fairly realistic, but i think i should have labelled all of the cassettes and videos or used empty ones. The diary could of also had more writing that is clearer to read in order for it to look better.
  • I also should have used a knife as a murder weapon, since that is one of the most common within slasher/horrors. Famously known in slashers such as the 'Scream' series.
