Revenge deconstruction, Nightmare on Elm Street and Silence of the Lambs:

Revenge:

Due to the fact our opening scene is based around the theme of revenge, i looked into movies which also expressed this. To find inspiration for our scene, and find out how different films/genres have expressed this.

A Nightmare on Elm Street: (2010)

Supernatural, slasher horror:

Freddie Kruger is a burns victim seeking revenge on the children of the parents who tracked him down and burned him alive in a building (due to the fact he abused children). He attacks the children within their dreams and turns a nightmare into reality, killing many of them.  Alike in our opening scene, how our killer was a burns victim who seeks revenge. Although a difference in genre, as Freddie is actually dead/a demon, both show several similarities such as the burns aspect and the revenge.

Shows the character being burnt by the children's family, similar to our opening scene, how the character gets burnt and then begins to seek revenge afterwards by killing others.

Use of makeup to show how the character has been burnt, alike how we will do in ours. A visual representation of why the killer is doing what they are doing/ why they want revenge.

This shows the killer getting revenge by killing one of the children of the adults who burned him.

Silence of the lambs: (1991)

Psychological horror:

The killer in silence of the lambs, 'Buffalo Bill'  feels as if they have been born within the wrong body, wanting to have the appearance that they feel on the inside to be expressed within the outside. However due to psychological reasons have not been able to get surgery in order to do so. The killer then goes on what seems to be a serious of  revenge attacks in order to take skin from the woman who they have murdered, and make themselves a feminine looking body suit.

Although seemingly very different from our idea of a burns victim who burns their victims to death. It relates on the theme of revenge. How out killer has been burnt and wants others to feel what she has felt, and how in silence of the lambs 'Buffalo Bill' wants to kill the woman in order to feel how they feel (to have the appearance of a woman).

Shows the character dressing up to look feminine, applying makeup, as well as visually showing the fact that they have used the method of tucking in order to represent how they wish to look more female. Showing how the character wishes to physically look like a woman, representing the theme of revenge and killing the woman in order to take their skin to achieve this.
The character is also shown applying makeup, to  further represent this.

Scenes of the killer, 'Buffalo Bill' sewing up the woman's skin in order to make the 'womanly' body suit, to show the need to change their physical appearance and how they have killed in order to do so.

A victim is also showed being starved in a hole, in order to make her skin looser so it can easily be removed. Showing the killers sense of revenge, how they have no caring for the victims well being. All they want is their skin to physically appear as a woman. Almost a revenge attack on her because they do not have what she does, and can't get it due to not being able to get the surgery due to too many psychological issues.

        Evaluation:

  • Overall i think both films fit well into the theme of revenge, particularly A Nightmare On Elm street, since it is very clear to see.
  • As well as how the theme of a burns victim who seeks revenge relates closely to our idea.
  • Revenge in Silence Of The Lambs has a more subtle interpretation on it. However the use of the psychological, realistic aspect of it allows it to relate to our genre, since A Nightmare On Elm Street has a slightly more supernatural feel to it.
