Analysis of Credit Sequence
The first shot showed the production company name 'New Line Cinema'. This gives us a good indication of the film genre and allows us to recognise some of the companies previous work so the audience can make a decision on whether to watch the film or not.
Throughout the opening sequence, a lot of close ups are used to show sharp razor blades, cutting of skin and dirty fingernails. These are just a few examples that emphasise the eerie mise-en-scene to give an indication of what the genre of the film is and some of the background story making it enigmatic.
This sequence also has a main focus on biblical texts which strongly emphasises a religious background which is common within psychological horrors. This also gives the audience a good idea of the genre and that religion will be of high importance throughout the film.
This shot shows an image of brain surgery using surgical tools which indicates that the villain within this film has an interest in brain activity. This links into the conventions of a psychological horror as the villain is intending to physically harm innocent people in a brutal manner which is strongly emphasised throughout the sequence.
The title of the film is in white letters which contrasts with the black background which can be seen to emphasise the dark, disturbing events that are set to take place throughout the film. Also the text looks like it has been rubbed out slowly which could represent the missing information at the point which will be filled in as the film progresses.
Evaluation
I believe that this opening sequence is very effective due to the creative editing techniques used. Also the props used in the sequence create very eerie and mysterious mise-en-scene which adds to the suspense created by a psychological horror. An improvement to make in this sequence would be to make the text slightly clearer because although its effective, some scenes from it can be difficult to read at high speed.
