Music Deconstruction: Horror:
I have looked at different non diegetic music/soundtrack within horror movies in order to gain inspiration for the types of music we could make or find for our own piece.
Wolf Creek: 2005: Horror/Thriller
- The music in the video is very dramatic, it has a lot of stringed instruments playing, a common feature in a horror soundtrack/ piece of non diegetic music.
- It also has harsh piano notes being played to have a contrast of high and low pitches.
- The music slows down half way through and has some creepy/tension building noises.
- Overall i think the music is quite good because it is quite creepy however it is also dramatic, adding emotion.
The Strangers: 2008: slasher/horror
- The music in this video is fairly quiet and eerie
- It also conforms to common conventions of horror movies.
- the music gradually builds up and becomes more tense as it goes on, this is a good feature since it is a slow progression.
- Again uses stringed instruments.
- Overall I think that the music is quite good, I like the gradual build and how it becomes louder. I also think it conforms to common conventions well.
Evaluation:
- Overall i think both of these pieces are good and are suitable for the genre.
- Wold creek is good since it fairly original since it has a more dramatic feel to it compared to pieces in other horror movies.
- The strangers also is good because it creates tension and conforms to common conventions.
