Deconstruction- Sound in a burning scene in slasher horror

Sound from a slasher horror film- Saw VII

I used the film 'Saw VII' as I think the 'Saw' franchise is very explicit and always goes over the top with sound effects to make the film as gruesome and tummy-turning as possible. Sound effects can change the way a person reacts to a film scene and will therefore change their overall opinion of the film itself.

In this specific clip, Bobby's wife, Joyce gets roasted alive in this Brazzen Bull oven. The sound effects include Joyce obviously screaming in agony, Bobby screaming as he has to watch his wife suffer and feeling so helpless, the burning and sizzling of the flesh while it's cooking, and the flaring blazes of the fire itself. These kind of sound effects are very relevant to our 2 minute film opening as we have included fiery sound effects to different parts where fire is included.

The first sounds heard include Bobby and Joyce screaming in fear as they both have to work in order to beat the timer of the game. However, as they realise that death at that point is inevitable, they scream in horror at the thought of one of them dying so horribly. A scream can make the audience tell what's happening in the scene and gives them an insight as to how scared or in agony the character is feeling.

The next sound effect is the flare up of the fire and it blazes up around the Bull oven. The fire makes slight crackles as it surrounds the metal cylinder, which makes it even more realistic and shows how dramatic and chaotic the fire is. The kind of fire sound effects used in our film opening are very similar as it's the same kind of flames blaring up effect you get when fire and petrol meet.

The last sound that can be heard is the sizzling and blistering up of Joyce's skin as it's cooking. It makes the scene typically slasher horror and creates a scarily realistic sense of pain and agony. The sound effects go very well with the visual effects of the flesh cooking, the sizzles and crackling of the skin match in time of the blistering.

Evaluation-
The diegetic sound effects that can be heard throughout the clip are extremely effective in making the clip seem very realistic and life-like. The sound usually makes the scene and can change how the viewer perceives the clip. To improve our film opening, I feel that we could do research into finding the perfect sound effects to make our film opening as realistic as possible. Or instead of doing research, we could make and record the sound ourselves.
