Practical Task - Editing Fade to Colour

Practical Task - Editing Fade to Colour

As a group we decided to insert our title 'Incinerate' at the end of our film opening. Before we could do this I decided to insert a plain white background so I could then insert a fade to colour which would allow a consistent fade between the last scene of the match lighting and the title page. I had to find a photo of Google images which I then saved and inserted into FinalCut Pro. I had to do this a couple of times because I found that some of the backgrounds that I saved were the wrong shape to fit the screen.

After finding one of the correct size and inserting it, I had to cut it down so it would fit with the ending of the music. This was quite difficult because I had to estimate the amount of time I would be leaving the title on for at the end and then decide the length of time between the transition and the title appearing. I decided that a shorter fade would be more effective as the audience watching would not like to stare at a white background for a long period of time.

Finally, after getting the timing right and placing the Fade to Colour in the correct place I watched it and as the flame from the match took up the whole screen, it then faded into the white in a smooth transition. This is an important element in the film opening because without it, it would jump from the match scene to the title and it would be clear that they were two different shots and it would therefore look unprofessional but with the fade it looks smoother and makes it flow better.

Evaluation
This was a fairly quick and simple task to complete in FinalCut Pro so I came across very minimal obstacles. The main problems was to find a picture of a white background that was an appropriate size and shade of white so it fit with the previous scene and so it flowed correctly. Also the timing was a slight issue as without the title being inserted I found it difficult to decide how long it would be and therefore I found it difficult to work the time around the fade to the white background as I didn't want to run out of soundtrack at the end of the film opening. Once I overcame all of these problems I think it looks very professional and the transition between scenes is very strong and smooth.
