Practical Task - Actress Choice

Practical Task - Actress Choice

As a group we needed to choice who we would use to act in our film opening. We knew it was a Slasher horror and that there would be a victim. We wanted to conform to the common conventions of horror films and have a female victim because they are seen as more vulnerable and more at risk of being harmed. After looking into all the options we decided on two girls from our original media group Izzy (top photo) and Kelsey (bottom photo). They both conform to the common convention of a victim by being blonde and young. This made them seem quite predictable and slightly vulnerable and therefore an obvious target for the killer.

Apart from fitting the conventions physically, both Kelsey and Izzy are the most confident girls in the group and were prepared to act in front of a camera without laughing or shying away. This was another reason why we decided to use these girls as the actresses in our film opening. Both Kelsey and Izzy are good actors and are able to listen appropriately and complete instructions efficiently.

We then needed to decide on the killer. The most difficult decision was whether they was going to be male or female. We knew that the common convention for Slasher horrors was to have a male killer but because we had gone with the convention for the victim we decided to use a female instead and managed to create a storyline around this female and about her obtaining scars and burns in a severe fire when she was younger which made her jealous of other young girls and led to her psychotic behaviour of her setting them on fire. If we had of used a male actor we would have gone with a friend from another media group Hugo (top photo) but because we decided to go with a female I decided to volunteer for the role (right in bottom photo) because it would be more reliable having actresses from our own group because we would be more dedicated to the filming days.

Evaluation
I believe we made the right choices for our actresses because I believe it conforms to some of the common conventions by having a female victim but also subverts by also having a female killer. Also I think that by having a female killer we was able to create a more exciting and unique storyline that wouldn't have of worked if we used a male killer. This made our film opening more interesting to record, edit and watch so overall I think we definitely made the correct decision.
