Filming- Prelim Deconstruction

Filming preliminary task

We used our previously made storyboard to create our shots. We used the media room, the hallway outside the media room and the stair case eading up to the corridor. To film, we used a borrowed camera. We made sure we had a variety of shots, including match on action, shot reverse shot, 180 degree rule, as well as long shot, close up, medium shot, hand held camera, extreme close ups, over the shoulder shot, reaction shot, two shot and a high angle shot. The first shot was a two shot of two of the girls (Kelsey and Lauryn) in a conversation, sat facing eachother. This includes the 180 degree rule, a two shot and a long shot. I feel that the lighting could be improved and the dialogue is hard to hear, so a better quality camera would be desirable. To improve the lighting, we could have put a brightening filter over theshot in the editing stage, or made the room we filmed in lighter in the actual filming stage.

When filming, we wanted to give the video some humour and make it reasionably lighthearted, we decided to do a short part of it as Mission Impossible themed. In this shot, the two girls run up the staircase at the end of the corridor, and come down the corridor, doing ‘spy-like’ rolls on the floor and making their hands in to gun shapes. We used a long shot of this to see all of the action. I think to imporove this shot, we should make the lighting more balanced, as changing lighting look svery unporoffesional. We had some problems with the lighting whilst shooting, as the camera was picking up the lighting to be a lot brighter than it actuslly was, so we pulled blinds down to try and block out any external light. However, when we came to editing, we noticed that the lighting was much too dark, and we could’ve down with the blinds being open.

Another effective shot was this extreme close up shot of Lauryn’s hand opening the door of the media room, this is a transition shot in between the match on action of opening the door. Although the shot seems insignificant it works very effectively in the video, as it’s a source of building tension and it backs up the point of the girls being sneaky and mysterious.

The purpose of this shot was to see the girl rummaging through the school files, and then pulling out the enemy girls’ files. She pulls out her medical records, which state her allergies. We used an over the shoulder shot, so that we could see the girl looking through the files, and the actual file itself. This also acts as a point of view shot, so we can see what the girl sees. We felt that the lighting in this shot is appropriate, and we wouldn’t have gone back and done anything different to this shot.

We decided to have a shot that used a hand held camera effect. We thought this was a good way of creating a sense of urgency and makes an action scene much more realistic. This shot also involves an over the shoulder shot, and point of view shot. This makes the audience feel as though they are running with the girls, trying to catch the enemy. If we could go back and change the shot, I would slightly improve the lighting and made it brighter, as this makes the filming environment seem more realistic.

Finally, our very last shot involved the enemy girl (myself) sneezing due to her allergy to oranges. We made this shot a high angle shot as it makes the girl seem vulnerable and weak. It makes the other girls seem superior and makes it look like the two girls one over the other girl with their revenge. I felt that the lighting and brightness was sufficient in this shot and If I could go back and change it, I would make the sneezing noise more realistic and turned the volume down in the editing process.
