Opening Credit Sequence for Seven

Editing:
Production Company

·       One of the most effective aspects of the title credit sequence is the choppy editing of the titles themselves when displaying actor names and producers.
·       The distorted effect corresponds well with the genre, psychological thriller, as the choppiness suggests confusion and distortion of the mind.
·       In some instances, the same word is repeated in different layers, achieved through editing, to emphasise the fragile and confused state of the mind also, emphasising the genre.
Antagonist Removing his Fingerprints
·       Close up and extreme close up shots are used in the short clips played between the title screens:
·       The regular cuts between live shots and titles emphasise the turmoil or state the antagonist, which the shots clearly feature, is in which inspires him to kill people.
·       They represent the conflicting emotions often played in a mentally ill person’s mind.
·      The shots themselves are, as mentioned, close ups and extreme close ups of different tasks the antagonists carries out; such as removing his finger prints, commonly associated with killers, and cutting out religious words.
The word 'God' seen to be cut out
representing religious theme of film.
·       They enable the audience to identify the film as a thriller, with some ties to religious aspects, clear through the narrative of the movie which is based around the 7 deadly sins.
·       Further stresses the psychological thriller genre of the movie.

The layering of two clips to create distortion is effective
in representing the confusion and disorientation of the killer

Typography:

·       The typography of the titles resembles hand writing; this makes it appear as though the antagonist has scribed the names, suggesting the actors are targeted.
Typography used for the title of 'Brad Pitt'
Layering of text to represent distortion
·       The hand writing itself is rough and unprofessional looking, resembling that of the child, which coincides with the psychological aspect of the movie where the mind is usually affected by an illness and thus, irrational or not ‘normal’.
·       The font used is a sans-Serif font, more commonly associated with modern idealisms, which corresponds
to the modern genre of the movie.
·       White is used as the text font, which contrasts with the mostly dark background. Black and white are colours commonly associated with thrillers or horrors as they represent the darkness of the killer’s mind.

Evaluation:

Overall, this sequence is extremely effective and would be easy to produce as amateurs for our movie opening. The simplicity of the jump cuts between the titles and the sketches is highly effective in creating enigma and linking to the genre which could be used in our own work.
