American Horror Story: Asylum is the second season of the American horror series 'American Horror Story'. It was released between October 17th 2012 and January 23rd 2013 and is names as an anthology series. It is set in 1964 in a mental institution, Briarcliff Manor and follows the stories of the staff and inmates who occupy it.

Images such as the ones shown above are frequently shown throughout the opening credits as a strong indication of possession and harm to the people involved in this TV series. The rolling of the eyes till you can only see white and the blood flowing from her nose creates unease and suggests that she is no longer able to control her own body. This is also clearly shown in the image where one characters ankle has been put into restraints so they are unable to move and therefore escape. This could be interpreted that many of the characters, as the series progresses begin to lose their own self control through panic and destruction.
The Typography used in these opening credits are very old fashioned and out dated from the present day. This is therefore a big indication that this series of American Horror Story will not be set in the present day and instead at some point in the past. I believe this was a very intelligent and creative way to give the audience a hint into the setting and time zone that the programme will be set in without making it too obvious. This enhances the mystery and suspense that is previously found in these opening credits.
Throughout these opening credits there is many references and shots showing items of religious and biblical origin. This suggests that the genre is a psychological horror and could involve sacrifice or mental illnesses. Also many of the shots are very dark and switch very quickly making it difficult to see what is shown. This adds to the tension felt and allows the producer to fit in more props and mise-en-scene to make the genre more obvious to the viewers.
