Special effects burns- practical task

Special effects- burns

I decided to practice special effects burns. I got my inspiration from the film 'Silent Hill', a burning scene takes place and a woman called Cybil gets lowered into fire and you see her face melting and singeing off. I used the tones and textures seen on her face on my models arm to recreate the burning effect.

To start, i gathered all of my every day makeup together and chose what i thought would give the right tones and colours to create a burn. Initially the colours red, black and brown stood out for me for the burn so i chose eyeshadows and lipsticks in those colours.

I started making a base colour with a mixture of the black and darkest brown eyeshadow to give the skin some depth and to create a starting point. I then built this up with red lipstick round the edges, to create the shape of the burn and to show where the skin has singed round the edge. I used different colours so that it didn't look to exact, as a realistic burn wouldn't be the same colour the whole way through. I used my finger to blend the colours together and to make the skin look almost smokey and charred.

Once i blended all of the colours together, i decided to add some fake blood to make it look wet and shiny as if the burn has just happened and the flesh is exposed. I blended some of the fake blood in with the colours so that the fake blood colour was more realistic and not as pink in colour. I also used black eyeliner to add in some more details of charred skin, this added to the realistic burn effect.

Along with the lighting, more black eyeshadow to make some areas look more charred, made the final image more effective and makes the burn look more realistic. I also used more dark red lipstick and blended it out to look almost grazed, and it also makes the burn look less exact, and therefore more realistic.

Evaluation-
I think that the end result of the burn could definitely look more realistic with more equipment and materials to work with. Due to the expenses of these other materials, I couldn't have made the burn look any better. The images taken of the burn could've been taken in better lighting to make them look much more professional, however I am happy with the end result although many improvements could have been made.
